Cosmetic surgery and facial rejuvenation procedures are on the rise. One of the reasons people are turning to cosmetic surgery more frequently is because they are more aware of their appearance as they see themselves in photos and videos. Social media has made the propagation of our images ever more noticed. By others and by ourselves. Between selfie images, online-dating, Facebook, and Instagram people are noticing themselves from all different angles.

Advances that make surgery safer and more effective, along with the increased awareness, is contributing to a large increase in the amount of cosmetic surgical procedures being performed. This is a CBS news segment featuring Dr. Steiger and one of his Facelift patients. It highlights the impact that social media is having on cosmetic surgery.

CBS News Anchor: Now it's time to face facts about our faces. We are seeing more of ourselves from different angles from all those selfies, Facebook, Facetime, Instagram, online dating, you name it, it is happening. Apparently many of us are unhappy with the way we look in them. CBS 4 shares how the Facebook Facelift is just one of the cosmetic medical procedures sky-rocketing along with social media.

Reporter: Sagging chins, tired eyes, a wrinkled brow or a large nose. These are but a few of the reasons more than $12-billion dollars was spent on cosmetic procedures in 2013.

Patient: “I was seeing a tired, old lady, who isn’t what I am,” explained Barbara Nohrenberg.

Reporter: Doctors say the single biggest reason is that women and men want to look better in their social media/network pictures. Barbara Nohrenberg isn’t shy about admitting that was her reason for having a facelift and a few other procedures.

Patient: Well I’m out there as a realtor, as a single dating female in a very competitive dating market. And I look in the mirror and I said you know, what I’m looking like now isn’t really who I am anymore,” said Nohrenberg.

Reporter: So Barbara turned to Dr. Jacob Steiger, a Boca Raton based facial plastic surgeon.

Dr. Steiger: I see this as a major trend because my specialty is the face. People are becoming more aware of their appearance because they are looking at themselves online.

Reporter: As Barbara and Dr. Steiger reviewed her before and after pictures, Dr. Jacob Steiger explained why people are seeing things in a selfie they may not see in the mirror, mirror on the wall.

Dr. Steiger- Some people when they look in the mirror they might see themselves at a straight-on view, erect, in a nice position. But when they’re looking at online media, when you’re taking pictures with your iPhone you’re kind of angling the camera in a certain way… and sometimes you’re seeing images of yourself or angles of yourself that you don’t normally see.

Reporter: Barbara’s eyes and neck bothered the 62-year old the most. On the day we met, she was still healing, but proud to admit that her change was subtle enough not to draw attention.

Patient: Because I don’t have that, we call it the Boca windswept look, where you look like you’re in a wind tunnel. It’s just me a little younger.

Reporter: Until her healing is complete, Barbara is offline, but looking forward to new sites and new pics.

Patient: And I’m just waiting for the new me to emerge completely!
